Social and Emotional Climate

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL EMOTIONAL PROGRAM

The Burlingame School District introduced a comprehensive Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program at its middle school in the 2014/15 school year. The SEL program uses the Second Step curriculum, and engages middle school students on topics such as communication, coping, and decision-making skills. The program is offered as part of the 6th grade core and reinforced in the 7th and 8th grades as lessons incorporated into main subjects. 

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING

The Burlingame School District introduced a comprehensive Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program at all its elementary in the 2014/15 school year. The SEL program, based on the Second Step curriculum and coordinated by the elementary counselor(s), includes lessons in the classroom and parent education opportunities. CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS SURVEY

The Burlingame School District conducts the California Healthy Kids Survey every other year to assess student perceptions on topics including school connectedness, drug use, and bullying and harassment. As required through our Tobacco Use Prevention Education grant, BSD administers the survey every two years to all 7th graders. Because of the value of the data gained through this survey and it's application in informing the district's LCAP, the district includes a 5th grade version of the survey. In addition, the district also offers staff and families an opportunity to provide feedback on similar topics through the California School Climate Survey (district staff) and the California School Parent Survey. 

TRIBES LEARNING COMMUNITIES

Tribes is a “way of learning and being together” (5) and is used in a few of our elementary schools. It is a process that uses a learning-community, whole-school model to create a positive school climate through improved teaching and classroom management, positive interpersonal relations, and opportunities for student participation. The Tribes process consists of four key agreements that staff, students and parents are expected to abide by: Attentive Listening; Appreciation and No Put-Down; Mutual Respect; and Participation with Right to Pass.

PLAYWORKS

PlayWorks is a recess play program that engages students at recess play around agreements designed to make recess fun, inclusive, and safe. Using student, teacher, and parent coaches during recess, students are encouraged to participate in established activities and games. A couple of our elementary school sites use PlayWorks with great success at motivating all students to participate in the funnest part of the day - recess!
